Conditions for Shear Band Formation in Tungsten Alloys

چکیده
Local loading conditions associated with shear banding formation in laboratory -@ten alloy specimens are examined. The specimens consist of compression specimens of large length to diameter ratio made of 91W-6Ni-3Co swaged tungsten alloys tested with the Hopkinson pressure bar and symmetric Taylor techniques. Experimental and numerical results provide insights on the effect of the hydrostatic pressure on shear band formation in tungsten alloys. Resume. DEVELOPMENT OF A TUNGSTEN HEAVY ALLOY, W-Ni-Mn, USED AS KINETIC ENERGY PENETRATOR
Abstract: The objective of this research was to develop a tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) having a microstructure and properties good enough to penetrate hard rolled steels as deep as possible. In addition this alloy should not have environmental problems as depleted uranium (DU) materials. For this purpose a wide spread literature survey was performed and on the base of information obtained in ...

We analyze the initiation and propagation of adiabatic shear bands in a tungsten heavy alloy by modeling each constituent as a heat-conducting, microporous, isotropic, elastothermoviscoplastic material. The two constituents are assumed to be perfectly bonded to each other so that the temperature, heat flux, displacements, and surface tractions are continuous across an interface between a tungst...
متن کاملMultiscale Analysis of Adiabatic Shear Bands in Tungsten Heavy Alloy Particulate Composites
We use a multiscale approach to analyze adiabatic shear bands in a tungsten heavy alloy particulate composite deformed in plane strain tension at a nominal strain rate of 5000/s. Fifty IJ.m diameter circular tungsten particulates are assumed to be randomly distributed and perfectly bonded to the nickel-iron matrix. The volume fraction of particulates equals 50%. We first analyze transient coupl...
متن کاملMechanics of defect transport in tungsten from first-principles calculations
p, li {white-space: prewrap;} Tungsten (W) is an important material for high temperature applications due to its refractory nature. However, like all transition metals from the VI-A group, W suffers from low-temperature brittleness and lack of ductility, which severely limits its use as a structural material. Tungsten’s mechanical properties can be enhanced by alloying with elements with d-elec...
متن کاملShear Band Formation in Bulk Metallic Glasses
In recent times, there has been a growing interest in the machining of amorphous metallic alloys, which are also called bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). These materials differ from common polycrystalline metallic alloys, because their atoms do not assemble on a crystalline lattice, and as a result, they have unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. A number of BMGs have been found to ...
